Most nerfed League champions in the history
Some LoL champions have a legendary history with the Riot Games balance team. They get nerfed over and over until they’re finally considered “fair.” Below we break down the most nerfed LoL champions ever, explain why they were hit so hard, and compare their kits on release vs how they work now in 2025. This guide is regularly updated so you can understand how much power was stripped away from each kit and why they feel weaker (or still secretly broken in the right hands).
Before we dive in, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing.
WHAT IS A “NERF” IN LEAGUE?
In gaming terms, a nerf is when a champion, item, or mechanic is deliberately weakened to reduce its impact or consistency. As Urban Dictionary defines it: “To weaken or make less dangerous. Taken from the ‘Nerf’ brand name, which makes sports equipment toys out of soft foam… Used frequently in the context of computer game balance changes.”
In LoL, a nerf usually means lower damage, higher cooldowns, less survivability, or removal of abusive mechanics. Over time, Riot iterates on champions until they’re no longer warping the game at every rank. That’s why you’ll see huge differences between a champion’s release version and the current 2025 version.
Below you’ll find detailed patch history snapshots for Ahri, Corki, Diana, Elise, Irelia, Jarvan IV and Vayne. For each champ we compare “On release” vs “Now (October 31, 2025)” in clean tables so you can see exactly what was taken away.
Note: Numbers below reference typical live values after years of adjustments. Micro-tuning still happens, but the trends are very clear.
AHRI NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Ahri, The Nine-Tailed Fox, has been one of the most popular mid laners in League for years. Because she’s so safe, mobile and reliable, Riot has repeatedly trimmed her sustain, burst and defensive tools. Below you can see how every part of her kit was toned down. This is exactly the kind of champion high-Elo players still lean on in climb services and duo boost sessions, because even after nerfs she’s consistent, forgiving and strong in solo queue pressure.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
Essence Theft (Passive)Sustain pattern / lane healing |
Orb of Deception (Q)Core poke / waveclear |
Fox Fire (W)Short-range tracking flames |
Charm (E)Pick / catch tool |
Spirit Rush (R)Triple dash ultimate |
Current Ahri win rate snapshot: 51.7% (above average midlane pressure, great for ranked climbing).
CORKI NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Corki launched with old-school marksman power plus mage-style poke. Over time Riot hammered his safety, spam potential and burst. Even after waves of nerfs, skilled players (including pro-level elo boosters and high-MMR duos) still pick Corki for long-range poke and objective control because he can pressure lanes without over-committing. Below you can see how brutal the changes were, especially to blind, mobility, and missile uptime.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Base Stats Mana economy / range / AS scaling |
Hextech Shrapnel Shells (Passive)Auto attack bonus true damage |
Phosphorous Bomb (Q)Lane trading tool |
Valkyrie (W)Escape / chase dash |
Gatling Gun (E)Armor shred DPS beam |
Missile Barrage (R)Long range poke / The Big One |
Current Corki win rate snapshot: 48.44% (below average unless piloted by someone who plays him perfectly).
DIANA NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Diana launched as an instant must-pick assassin/fighter with insane burst and survivability. Riot immediately started cutting base numbers and cooldowns so she wouldn’t delete entire teams on a single engage. Even after nerfs, she’s still a famous snowball pick in solo queue and flex jungle/mid. You’ll often see her prioritized in coordinated duos where one player sets up fights and the other cleans up.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
Moonsilver Blade (Passive)On-hit swing damage |
Crescent Strike (Q)Signature poke / mark apply |
Pale Cascade (W)Shield + close range burst |
Moonfall (E)Pull / CC tool |
Had no serious changes initially. | Still mainly utility (group pull), adjusted over time but less raw “delete you instantly” synergy compared to old burst windows. |
Lunar Rush (R)Gap close / reset pressure |
Current Diana win rate snapshot: 51.47% (still above that ~50% “balanced” line in coordinated hands).
ELISE NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Elise is famous for early lane/jungle dominance, forcing you to respect her burst and cocoon stun. When players figured out how oppressive she was, Riot hammered her survivability, CC reliability and spam potential. You’ll notice a pattern: less free safety early, more commitment required later. Classic Riot strategy to stop “perma-gank at level 3 and auto-win.”
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Movement Speed Human vs Spider form mobility |

Spider Form / Human Form (R)Transform bonuses |

Current Elise win rate snapshot: 43.4% (Elise was nerfed extremely hard and struggles if she doesn’t snowball instantly).
IRELIA NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Irelia’s nerfs got so famous that “better nerf Irelia” basically became a meme. She used to heal forever in lane, stun-lock enemies and still stick to targets. Riot chipped away at her sustain and point-and-click safety. She’s still deadly in the right hands, but you’re expected to outplay now, not just out-stat people.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Base Stats Lane durability & regen |
Bladesurge (Q)Gap close / reset execute |
Hiten Style (W)Lane sustain source |
Equilibrium Strike (E)Stun / slow utility |
Transcendent Blades (R)Ranged blade ultimate |
Current Irelia win rate snapshot: 50.62% (basically balanced; high skill ceiling remains).
JARVAN IV NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Jarvan IV has always offered universal value: engage, peel, armor shred, forced terrain with Cataclysm. That toolkit made him an auto-pick. Riot’s answer? Repeated nerfs to base damage, shielding, CC radius, and utility. Even today he’s still common in ranked because he brings everything a team needs in one slot — lockdown, burst, peel — even if his raw numbers are lower.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Base Stats Mana scaling / armor baseline |
Martial Cadence (Passive)First-hit %HP chunk |
Dragon Strike (Q)Armor shred poke / EQ combo |
Golden Aegis (W)Self + team shield |
Demacian Standard (E)AS/Armor aura + EQ knockup origin |
Cataclysm (R)Arena-style ultimate |
Current Jarvan IV win rate snapshot: 48.06% (still picked for utility even when his raw numbers dip).
VAYNE NERFS: PATCH HISTORY (Updated October 31, 2025)
Vayne is the classic “if I scale, I 1v9” AD carry. Riot repeatedly nerfed her range, burst, true damage and stealth so she wouldn’t just delete tanks and duel everyone with zero counterplay. You’ll see how her chase speed, condemn damage and ultimate stealth got hit. She’s still terrifying late, but you’re forced to work harder to reach that point.
| Ability / Stat | On Release | Now (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Base Stats Range / scaling pattern |
Night Hunter (Passive)Chase passive |
Tumble (Q)Short dash auto-reset |
Silver Bolts (W)%HP true damage proc |
Condemn (E)Knockback / wall stun |
Final Hour (R)Burst steroid + stealth tumble |
Current Vayne win rate snapshot: 48.7% (lower baseline, still terrifying in late-game hands that know how to kite).
